I like being at spring training. I like watching spring training games. But I hate spring training. Spring training is filled with updates from the field like "Johan Santana played catch", or "Daniel Murphy walked upright from the dirt to the grass today", or even "David Wright takes ground balls at shortstop ... how will this affect the Mayan Calendar?" Lord, kill me before I have to endure this for six weeks before there are real games.

Thankfully, we've got a live one:

Jon Niese reported to camp yesterday about 10 pounds lighter — after he got a nose job. The Mets lefty revealed he had the procedure done last October at the urging of former teammate Carlos Beltran, who offered to pay for the surgery.

During his pre-op consultation, Niese was told he had an abnormality in his sinus that was affecting his breathing. The abnormality was repaired, and Niese credits that for helping him lose about 10 pounds during the offseason.

Marcia_Brady_NoseThis is one of those stories that sounds like it should be read by Kevin Frazier and Brooke Anderson rather than Kevin Burkhardt and Ron Darling, since nose jobs are so Hollywood. Followed of course by the gossip tabloid show running the same fifteen seconds of footage of Niese for a half hour and calling it "backstory".

But it's a good thing that Niese's sinus condition is gone. I knew somebody who had a similar operation and it made a huge difference for him in the long run. Maybe Niese losing ten pounds will help him down the stretch. Hell, maybe Niese being able to breathe will make a difference. But if it doesn't, we all know who to blame.
